Chapter 5 - The Paternity Shockwave

Evelyn’s face turned an ugly shade of crimson. She slammed her hand onto the mahogany table, rattling the crystal goblets.
“How dare you bring police warrants to my dinner table!” Evelyn hissed. “Grant, control your hysterical wife this instant! Adrian is a pillar of Boston society! He is an honored guest and a lifelong family friend!”
Grant looked up, his voice cracking with humiliation. “Mother... is it true? Did Adrian use his own DNA for Maddie?”
“Adrian provided our family with superior genetic material!” Evelyn declared without a shred of remorse, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. “Your father’s line was weak, Grant! When you came to me whining about your sterile diagnosis, I refused to allow some anonymous gutter trash from an online catalog to inherit the Bennett family estate! Adrian did what was necessary to preserve our intellectual prestige!”
Rachel let out a cold, bitter laugh. “You talk about preserving the Bennett line, Evelyn? You talk about pure blood and prestige?”
Rachel pulled a second manila envelope from her bag—the confidential genetic report she had received that very morning from the state laboratory.
“What is that?” Evelyn demanded, a sudden flicker of unease darting through her eyes.
“When the clinic opened the inquiry,” Rachel explained, standing up from the table and scooping Maddie protectively into her arms, “they didn't just test Maddie against Dr. Vale. They ran a complete cross-generational profile using Grant’s baseline DNA submitted during our initial fertility intake.”
Rachel slid the genetic comparison sheet across the polished wood directly in front of Grant.
“Look at page two, Grant,” Rachel said softly.
Grant picked up the paper with shaking hands. He read the primary findings aloud, his voice dropping into a horrified rasp:
‘Subject Grant Bennett: Paternal Lineage Analysis. Paternity exclusion confirmed against Deceased Patriarch William Bennett: 0.00% biological relation.’
Grant gasped, turning the page.
‘Biological Paternity Confirmed: Subject Dr. Adrian Vale. Probability of Paternity: 99.998%.’
Grant dropped the paper as if it had burst into flames. He looked across the table at Dr. Adrian Vale, and then at his mother Evelyn.
“You...” Grant stammered, the breath leaving his lungs. “William Bennett wasn't my father? Adrian... Adrian is my biological father?”

The entire room seemed to collapse under the weight of the revelation.
Dr. Vale looked at the floor, unable to meet Grant’s eyes. Evelyn sank back into her high-backed velvet chair, her face draining of all color, her thirty-year illusion of aristocratic purity shattering into absolute dust.
