Chapter 2 - The Photograph in the Attic

Rachel sat at her desk, the glow of the computer monitor illuminating her pale face. Twenty-two half-siblings. All born within a four-year window. All clustered within a thirty-mile radius of downtown Boston.
Anonymous commercial donors were strictly limited to geographic quotas and cross-state dispersals to prevent local consanguinity. A local cluster of twenty-two children meant only one thing: someone had engaged in deliberate, unregulated mass insemination.
Rachel rushed into the study where Grant kept his old family keepsakes. She began pulling open storage boxes, searching for the original intake folders from their first consultation at the clinic six years ago.
Inside a leather trunk beneath stacks of tax ledgers, she uncovered a velvet-bound photo album belonging to the Bennett estate from the late 1980s. She flipped through the yellowed pages of charity galas, equestrian cups, and summer regattas in Martha’s Vineyard.
On page fourteen, a photograph stopped her breath.
Standing on the deck of a private yacht beside a thirty-year-old Evelyn Bennett was a handsome, dark-haired man in a physician’s blazer. His arm was draped familiarly around Evelyn’s waist, their heads tilted together in an intimate posture that went far beyond casual friendship.
Beneath the photograph, in Evelyn’s sharp cursive script, were the words:
‘Adrian and I, Cape Cod — Summer of 1988.’
Rachel pulled out Maddie’s original medical birth certificate and the clinic’s founder registry.
The Medical Director who had signed off on Rachel’s artificial insemination procedure—the man who owned and operated the New England Fertility Institute—was Dr. Adrian Vale.
The same Adrian from the 1988 photograph.
Rachel walked into the living room, holding the photograph in one trembling hand and the ancestry printout in the other. Grant was sitting on the sofa watching the evening news.
She dropped the papers onto the coffee table in front of him.
“Maddie’s records were breached,” Rachel said, her voice shaking with rage and disbelief. “The clinic says she wasn't conceived with Donor 4082. She has twenty-two half-siblings in Massachusetts alone. And Dr. Adrian Vale has been in your mother’s life since before you were born.”
Grant looked at the photograph. Then he looked at the DNA sibling report.
Instead of gasping, instead of demanding to call the police or the medical board, Grant closed his eyes, pressed his palms against his temples, and whispered:
“Leave it alone, Rachel. I’m begging you... just leave it alone.”

Rachel stared at her husband as a sickening realization washed over her.
“You knew,” Rachel whispered, taking a step back. “You knew about Dr. Vale the entire time.”
