Chapter 9 - THE BETRAYAL INSIDE THE HOUSE
Gabriel had been Arthur's closest ally for sixteen years.
They had grown up together.
Fought together.
Buried friends together.
Arthur trusted him more than anyone.
Now that trust was breaking.
The financial records revealed suspicious transfers connected to companies Gabriel controlled.
Several payments dated back to the Halsted Street fire.
Others were recent.
Including transactions that had been used to accuse Elias Varela of stealing from the ports.
Arthur stared at the records.
The pattern was unmistakable.
Gabriel had manipulated financial information.
He had made Elias appear guilty.
And Arthur had acted on the lie.
Norah watched Arthur's expression change.
He looked as though someone had hollowed him out.
“I killed him.”
His voice was barely audible.
Norah didn't answer.
Arthur covered his face.
“He was innocent.”
She looked at him.
Then said quietly:
“You can't undo what happened.”
Arthur lowered his hands.
“But you can stop protecting the person responsible.”
He stared at her.
May you like
She continued.
“And you can tell the truth.”
