Chapter 6 - THE SWITCH IN THE BASEMENT
The original warehouse investigation had been closed years earlier.
But the records still existed.
Arthur hired an independent fire investigator and attorney to review the case.
Norah insisted on receiving copies of relevant findings.
The investigator discovered discrepancies.
The electrical system had been modified shortly before the fire.
A safety cutoff switch had been bypassed.
Maintenance records were incomplete.
And Samuel Hayes had filed a complaint two days before the incident.
The complaint described unauthorized alterations to the building's emergency power system.
Norah read the report.
Her hands trembled.
“He warned them.”
Arthur nodded.
“Yes.”
“And they ignored him.”
“Or someone made sure his warning disappeared.”
The investigator explained that the evidence did not yet establish who caused the fire.
But it strongly suggested the official explanation was incomplete.
Norah stared at the photographs.
Her father hadn't been careless.
