Chapter 8 - THE ROOM BEHIND THE BOOKCASE

Dominic Costello had loved books.

His private library contained thousands.

History.

Philosophy.

Military strategy.

Rare first editions.

Arthur had never understood the obsession.

But Evelyn explained that Dominic had installed a concealed compartment behind one of the shelves.

The entrance was hidden behind a heavy bookcase.

Arthur searched the library with a professional locksmith and building specialist.

Eventually, they found it.

Inside was a narrow storage space.

Dust covered several boxes.

Old photographs.

Financial ledgers.

Property records.

And a sealed envelope.

Arthur opened it.

His father's handwriting filled the first page.

If Arthur finds this, it means I was right.

Arthur stopped breathing.

He continued reading.

Dominic had discovered evidence of financial manipulation inside his organization.

Someone had been redirecting money through shell companies.

Someone had altered property records.

Someone had used the Halsted Street redevelopment project to conceal illegal transactions.

Dominic suspected a trusted associate.

But he hadn't identified the person.

At the bottom of the letter was one sentence.

Do not trust the man who calls you brother.

Arthur stared.

Only one person had called him brother since childhood.

Gabriel Rourke.
