Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO CAME BACK DIFFERENT

Years passed.
Arthur served his sentence and participated in counseling and rehabilitation programs.
He spent much of his time reading.
Writing.
And confronting the choices he'd made.
He no longer had an empire.
No armed men waiting outside his door.
No luxury estate.
No power to command others.
For the first time in his adult life, he had to live without fear as a weapon.
When he was released, he contacted Norah through a mutual attorney.
He didn't demand to see her.
He asked whether she would be willing to meet.
Norah considered carefully.
Then agreed.
They met in a public café.
Arthur looked older.
There was gray in his hair.
His face carried lines that hadn't been there before.
But his eyes were different.
Less guarded.
Less hard.
“Hello, Norah.”
She smiled faintly.
“Hello, Arthur.”
He sat across from her.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then he said:
“I'm sorry.”
Norah looked at him.
He continued.
“For everything.”
“For the danger I brought into your life.”
“For the harm I caused.”
“For the man I was.”
His voice trembled.
“I know I don't deserve forgiveness.”
Norah took a breath.
“Forgiveness isn't something you can demand.”
Arthur nodded.
“I know.”
She studied him.
Then said:
“But people can change.”
He looked up.
She continued.
“That doesn't erase the past.”
“No.”
“But it can change what happens next.”
Arthur's eyes filled.
For the first time, he didn't reach for her.
Didn't ask for comfort.
Didn't try to make her responsible for his pain.
May you like
He simply nodded.
“Thank you.”
