Chapter 5 - THE FIRE THAT BUILT AN EMPIRE

Dominic Costello had ruled Chicago's underworld for thirty years.

He was feared.

Respected.

And remembered as a man who never forgave betrayal.

Arthur had inherited his empire after Dominic's death.

But the cuff link suggested something Arthur hadn't considered.

Someone had been wearing his father's old jewelry.

Someone close enough to the family to access personal belongings.

And someone who might have been connected to the warehouse fire six years earlier.

Norah told Arthur about her father.

Samuel Hayes.

The electrician.

The warehouse fire.

The stranger with the wolf cuff link.

Arthur listened without interrupting.

When she finished, his face was pale.

“Your father worked at the Halsted Street warehouse?”

Norah nodded.

“Yes.”

Arthur turned toward the window.

“That building belonged to my father.”

She stared.

“What?”

Arthur closed his eyes.

“The fire happened three months before he died.”

Norah felt cold.

“Did he know my father?”

“I don't know.”

She stepped closer.

“Find out.”

Arthur looked at her.

There was no pleading in her expression.

No attempt to flatter him.

Only a demand.

A daughter asking for the truth.

May you like

He nodded.

“I will.”
