Chapter 5 - THE COUSIN WHO WANTED AN EMPIRE

Luca Vitelli had spent his entire life standing beside Antonio.

Never in front.

Never behind.

Beside.

At least, that was how he described it.

In reality, Antonio had inherited control of the family's shipping interests after his father's death.

Luca had inherited a title without authority.

He managed secondary companies.

Attended meetings.

Collected generous dividends.

But he couldn't approve major contracts without Antonio's signature.

For years, he had resented that limitation.

Then a foreign investment group approached him with an offer.

They wanted access to Vitelli shipping terminals in Italy and the United States.

Antonio had refused the arrangement after independent advisers raised concerns about hidden ownership and potential sanctions exposure.

Luca saw something different.

Money.

Influence.

A chance to become the man everyone obeyed.

Investigators eventually established that Luca had arranged private meetings with representatives of the investment group.

They also found financial transfers into companies he controlled.

But the most troubling discovery came from an employee at the Vitelli residence.

She remembered Luca entering Antonio's study on the afternoon of the flight.

He had carried a small black pouch.

When he emerged, he was holding the medication case.

Antonio read the statement in silence.

Marco waited.

Finally, Antonio asked, “Did anyone challenge him?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Marco swallowed.

“Because he's family.”

Antonio closed his eyes.

Those three words had excused more mistakes than he could count.

At the hotel, Evelyn received a second envelope.

This time, it contained a copy of an airline complaint.

Someone had accused her of administering medication without authorization and interfering with a passenger's care.

The complaint included details that had never been released publicly.

Evelyn stared at it.

Then called Inspector O'Connell.

“Someone is trying to make me responsible.”

The detective listened.

Then said, “Bring it to the station.”

Evelyn swallowed.

“Am I in trouble?”

O'Connell's voice softened.

“Not because you reported this.”

May you like

Evelyn looked toward the window.

For the first time, she wondered whether returning to New York would actually make her safer.
