Chapter 13 - THE DINNER WITHOUT BODYGUARDS

Evelyn arrived in Rome on a clear October evening.

Antonio met her outside the airport.

No convoy.

No men in dark suits.

Just him.

She smiled.

“Where's the army?”

He laughed.

“Not invited.”

They walked through the city.

Past fountains.

Old churches.

Restaurants spilling warm light onto narrow streets.

Antonio took her to a small trattoria near the river.

The owner greeted him like an old friend.

Evelyn looked around.

“This is beautiful.”

Antonio smiled.

“I used to come here with my mother.”

They sat.

Ordered pasta.

Shared bread.

For the first time, Evelyn saw Antonio without the weight of his reputation.

He was funny.

Thoughtful.

Occasionally awkward.

He asked about her childhood.

Her sister.

Her favorite cities.

She asked about his plans.

Antonio hesitated.

“I'm still figuring that out.”

Evelyn nodded.

“That's allowed.”

He smiled.

After dinner, they walked beside the river.

Antonio stopped.

“Evelyn.”

She turned.

He took a breath.

“I don't know what my life will look like in a year.”

She studied him.

He continued.

“But I know I want you in it.”

Evelyn smiled faintly.

“That's a big statement.”

“I know.”

She stepped closer.

“Then start with tomorrow.”

Antonio laughed softly.

“Tomorrow?”

She nodded.

“Coffee. A walk. Maybe another dinner.”

He smiled.

“I can do that.”

And they walked on.

May you like

Slowly.

Without promises neither could keep.
