Chapter 14 - THE WOMAN WHO TAUGHT HIM TO BREATHE

Two years later, Antonio stood beside a hospital bed again.
This time, he wasn't the patient.
Evelyn was.
She had broken her ankle in a fall during a winter storm.
Nothing life-threatening.
But painful enough to require surgery.
Antonio sat beside her, looking more frightened than he had during his own medical emergency.
Evelyn opened her eyes.
“Why do you look like that?”
He swallowed.
“Like what?”
“Like someone just told you the world is ending.”
He laughed weakly.
She reached for his hand.
“I'm okay.”
Antonio nodded.
“I know.”
She smiled.
“You don't look convinced.”
He exhaled.
Then said, “I remember how it felt not to breathe.”
Evelyn's expression softened.
He continued.
“And I remember opening my eyes and seeing you.”
She squeezed his hand.
Antonio looked down.
“I don't want to lose you.”
Evelyn smiled gently.
“Then stop trying to control every bad thing that might happen.”
He looked up.
She continued.
“Just be here.”
Antonio nodded.
He leaned forward and kissed her forehead.
“I can do that.”
And he stayed.
Through the long afternoon.
Through the evening.
Through the quiet hours when she slept.
May you like
Not because he could prevent every danger.
But because love sometimes meant being present when you couldn't fix anything.
