Chapter 15 - THE LIFE SHE GAVE HIM BACK

Five years after the flight over the Atlantic, Evelyn Foster stood beneath the evening lights of a small garden outside Rome.

She wore a simple ivory dress.

Her hair was pinned back.

Her sister Lucy stood beside her.

Across the garden, Antonio Vitelli waited.

He wore a dark suit.

No bodyguards stood near the aisle.

No cameras followed him.

No one whispered about his reputation.

He looked nervous.

Evelyn smiled.

She had never seen him look quite so human.

Sofia sat in the front row.

She was already crying.

The ceremony was small.

Family.

Close friends.

A few colleagues.

Evelyn had continued flying.

Antonio had continued rebuilding his life and meeting the legal responsibilities created by his past.

Their relationship had grown slowly.

Across cities.

Across time zones.

Across difficult conversations.

They had learned how to disagree.

How to apologize.

How to make space for each other's lives.

And now they stood together.

Antonio took Evelyn's hands.

“I spent most of my life believing strength meant never needing anyone,” he said.

His voice trembled.

“Then one night, thirty-seven thousand feet above the ocean, I couldn't breathe.”

Evelyn's eyes filled.

Antonio continued.

“And you reminded me that being alive isn't the same as living.”

He swallowed.

“You gave me a second chance.”

Evelyn smiled through tears.

Then she spoke.

“I didn't save you because you were powerful.”

She paused.

“I saved you because you were a person who needed help.”

Antonio closed his eyes.

Evelyn continued.

“And I love you because you chose to become someone who could accept it.”

The guests grew quiet.

She smiled.

“Not perfectly. Not all at once. But honestly.”

Antonio laughed through tears.

They exchanged rings.

And when the officiant pronounced them married, Antonio kissed her gently.

The garden erupted in applause.

Later that evening, they stood beneath the stars.

Evelyn looked toward the sky.

A plane crossed overhead, its lights blinking against the darkness.

Antonio followed her gaze.

“Thinking about work?”

She smiled.

“A little.”

He laughed.

She looked at him.

“Do you ever think about that night?”

Antonio nodded.

“Every day.”

She smiled faintly.

Then he said:

“But not because I almost died.”

Evelyn looked up.

“Because that's the night I started living differently.”

She leaned against him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Antonio took her hand.

“Come on.”

“Where?”

He smiled.

“Home.”

And together, they walked toward the warm lights of the house.

Not toward an empire.

Not toward power.

May you like

Not toward the life Antonio had inherited.

But toward the life they had chosen.
