Chapter 9 - The Gavel of the Broken Syndicate

Four months later, Courtroom 4B of the United States District Court in Brooklyn convened for the formal sentencing hearing of Julian Duca, Vivian Chen, and Dr. Harold Vance.
The gallery was packed to maximum capacity with shipping magnates, corporate directors, and federal investigators who had followed the sensational downfall of the high-society poisoning ring.
Sitting in the front row of the gallery, radiant and composed, was Lorenzo Duca, dressed in an immaculate charcoal suit. Beside him sat Clara Carter, wearing an elegant dark navy dress, and six-year-old Lucas, who was completely healthy, robust, and full of life.
Julian Duca, Vivian Chen, and Dr. Vance sat at the defense table in bright orange prison jumpsuits, their hands and feet bound in heavy steel transport chains. All three were gaunt, unkempt, and broken, unable to lift their eyes from the floor.
Chief Federal Judge Harrison Miller delivered the court’s judgment with thunderous moral authority.
“The defendants engaged in a depraved, calculated, and monstrous campaign of slow chemical assassination against an innocent six-year-old child to satisfy their insatiable corporate greed,” Judge Miller declared.
The judge brought down his heavy wooden gavel with a resounding crack that echoed like thunder through the vaulted marble hall.
“Julian Duca is hereby sentenced to Life Imprisonment at ADX Florence without the possibility of parole. Vivian Chen is sentenced to Thirty-Five Years in federal custody. Dr. Harold Vance is stripped of his medical license in perpetuity and sentenced to Twenty-Five Years in federal penitentiary.”
Judge Miller struck his gavel a second time.
“Furthermore, the court orders the complete forfeiture of all personal assets, offshore trusts, and equity shares belonging to the defendants, transferring eighty-five million dollars in civil restitution directly to the Lucas Duca Pediatric Cardiovascular Recovery Foundation.”
A collective, emotional cheer erupted from the public gallery.
Julian collapsed forward, weeping into his chained hands as federal marshals hauled the prisoners to their feet and escorted them through the heavy iron holding doors forever.

Lorenzo stood up, took Clara’s hand in his, and lifted Lucas onto his shoulders as they walked out of the courtroom into the brilliant spring sunshine.
