Chapter 8 - The Interrogation in the Sublevel Vault

By 2:00 PM, Dr. Mara Quinn had initiated a comprehensive clinical detoxification protocol for six-year-old Lucas.

With the poisoned pillows removed and intravenous binding agents clearing the remaining Digitoxin from his bloodstream, the transformation in the child was immediate and astonishing.

By afternoon, the grey pallor had vanished from Lucas’s cheeks, replaced by a healthy, natural pink flush. His breathing was deep and clear, and for the first time in thirty-six months, he sat up in bed and asked for a bowl of warm chicken soup.

Lorenzo sat on the edge of the mattress, feeding his son with a silver spoon, tears shining in his eyes as he watched the boy smile.

“Dad?” Lucas whispered softly.

“Yes, my brave boy?”

“My chest doesn't hurt anymore,” Lucas smiled, resting his small hand on Lorenzo’s sleeve. “The bad dreams are gone.”

Lorenzo brought his son’s hand to his lips, kissing his small knuckles with fierce, reverent love. “They are gone forever, Lucas. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again.”

A soft knock sounded at the open bedroom door.

Clara Carter stood in the doorway, holding three-year-old Emma by the hand. Emma was wearing a clean yellow sundress, clutching her cloth doll with yarn hair.

Lucas’s eyes lit up with pure joy. “Emma!”

Emma let go of her mother’s hand and ran across the room, climbing onto the edge of the big bed, handing Lucas a freshly picked yellow daisy from the garden.

“I brought you a flower, Brother Lucas,” Emma beamed. “The pretty lady is gone, so you can play tag with me tomorrow.”

Lucas giggled, hugging the little girl tightly.

Lorenzo stood up and walked over to Clara. He looked at the quiet, hardworking woman who had raised an angel with the courage to speak the truth.

“Clara,” Lorenzo said softly, his voice rich with profound gratitude.

“Mr. Duca,” Clara replied, lowering her gaze respectfully. “I am so relieved Lucas is well.”

“Look at me, Clara,” Lorenzo commanded gently.

Clara lifted her eyes.

“You and Emma saved my son’s life,” Lorenzo said, placing a warm hand on her shoulder. “From this day forward, you are no longer domestic staff in this house. You are family. Whatever you need, whatever Emma needs—an education, security, a home—it is yours for the rest of your lives.”
