Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

That night, as the rhythmic hum of the PICU monitors filled Room 4, Ryan sat on the windowsill with his head in his hands.

I walked over and placed a warm hand on his shoulder. “Ryan... talk to me.”

Ryan looked up, his eyes bloodshot and haunted by decades of repressed memories.

“When I was six years old,” Ryan began in a broken whisper, “my younger brother, David, was born. One day, David wouldn't stop crying from colic. My father was away on business. Diane took David into the laundry room, locked the door, and turned off the lights for four hours. When my father came home and threatened to divorce her, she smiled, cried, and convinced him that David was just throwing a toddler tantrum.”

Ryan took a deep, shuddering breath.

“David moved to Seattle the day he turned eighteen and never came back. For twenty years, I told myself my mother was just strict. I told myself she was just from a 'different generation.' When she criticized the way you held Noah, when she sneered at your parenting, I thought she was just being an overbearing mother-in-law.”

He looked at Noah sleeping peacefully in the hospital crib, an IV line taped to his tiny hand.

“I was blind, Emily. If Lily hadn't held up that tablet today, I might have questioned you. I might have let that monster stay in our lives.”

I took Ryan’s face in my hands, looking straight into his eyes.

“You didn't hesitate when the truth came out, Ryan. You protected our son. That is what matters.”

“I’m never speaking to her again,” Ryan swore, his voice ironclad. “She is dead to this family.”
