Chapter 10 - Sunlight and First Steps

One year after that dark Sunday afternoon.

The warm summer morning sun beamed down across the lush green grass of our Hill Country backyard.

Fourteen-month-old Noah, now fully healed with zero neurological deficits, stood proudly on his chubby bare feet near the porch steps. He was wearing bright blue overalls, his hazel eyes sparkling with excitement, his brown curls bouncing in the gentle breeze.

“Come on, Noah! You can do it!” Lily cheered, kneeling on the grass ten feet away, holding out his favorite plush puppy.

Ryan and I sat together on the wooden steps, holding hands, our hearts full of radiant peace.

Noah took a deep breath, let go of the porch railing, and took his first bold, independent step forward.

Then a second step.

Then a third.

He wobbled, giggled with pure, untamed delight, and tumbled safely into Lily’s open arms.

The entire backyard erupted into cheers and joyful laughter.

Lily scooped her baby brother into the air, spinning him in a circle under the golden sunlight while Noah’s sweet, ringing laughter echoed across the open fields.

I leaned my head against Ryan’s shoulder, watching our children thrive in the boundless light of unconditional love.

The cruelty that had tried to break our home had failed. In its place stood an iron fortress of truth, courage, and a love that would protect our children forever under the open Texas sky.
