Chapter 4 - The Fractured Matriarch

At 6:30 PM, Dr. Patel walked back into the consultation room holding Noah’s CT scan films.

I held my breath, clutching Ryan’s hand so tightly our knuckles turned white.

“The scans show a linear hairline fracture along the left parietal bone,” Dr. Patel announced, his tone serious but reassuring. “However, the subdural space is clear of active hemorrhage, and there is no midline brain shift. His fontanelle pressure is stable. We are admitting him to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for forty-eight hours of neurological monitoring.”

A deep, shuddering gasp of relief escaped my chest, and I collapsed against Ryan’s shoulder, weeping uncontrollably.

“He’s going to be okay, Emily,” Ryan whispered into my hair, his own tears falling onto my collar. “Our boy is going to heal. And nobody will ever lay a hand on him again.”

While Noah was settled into PICU Bed 4 with Lily reading him a bedtime story, the police were executing the warrant.

At 7:45 PM, three Dallas County Sheriff cruisers surrounded Diane’s gated townhome in North Dallas.

Diane was in the middle of packing luxury suitcases, preparing to drive to her sister’s ranch in Oklahoma to evade authorities, when deputies breached the front foyer.

“Diane Vance, you have a warrant for your arrest for Felony Injury to a Child!” Deputy Miller commanded, weapons drawn.

Diane shrieked in outrage, throwing a crystal perfume bottle at the officers before two deputies forced her against the wall, ratcheting heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.

“Do you know who my family is?!” Diane screamed as she was dragged down the front steps in full view of her neighbors. “My son is a prominent corporate director! He will have your badges for this!”

“Save it for the magistrate, ma'am,” Deputy Miller replied coldly, pushing her into the back of the squad car.
