Chapter 6 - THE LETTER MY FATHER NEVER SENT

Margaret found the letter inside my father's personal safe.
It was addressed to me.
Unsent.
Unopened.
I sat alone in his office as I unfolded it.
His handwriting was familiar.
Strong.
Careful.
A little slanted.
My dearest Elise,
There are things I should have told you sooner.
I spent my life building a company that could survive without me. But I made the mistake of believing the people around me valued it for the same reasons I did.
Recently, I discovered irregularities involving Thomas Reed and outside investors.
I also learned that Adrian has been asking questions about the trust.
I don't know what he intends.
But I want you to remember something.
You are not responsible for preserving a marriage at the cost of your dignity.
And you are not obligated to protect anyone who uses your love as leverage.
Whatever happens, trust your judgment.
You always had more strength than you realized.
Love, Dad.
I read the letter three times.
Then I cried.
Not quietly.
Not gracefully.
I cried the way I'd wanted to cry at his funeral but couldn't.
For months, I'd wondered whether Dad had been disappointed in me.
He'd always been reserved around Adrian.
Careful.
Polite.
Never openly critical.
Now I understood.
He'd seen something.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
“I'm sorry, Dad.”
Margaret entered quietly.
She waited.
Then sat beside me.
“Your father loved you very much,” she said.
I nodded.
“I know.”
She looked toward the letter.
“He was proud of you.”
I swallowed.
“He never said it enough.”
Margaret smiled sadly.
“He said it to me.”
I looked up.
She continued.
“He once told me that if he could leave you one thing, it wouldn't be the hotels.”
I stared.
“What would it be?”
Margaret smiled.
“The confidence to walk into any room and know you belonged there.”
I began crying again.
That evening, I returned home.
Adrian was waiting.
He stood in the living room.
His face was pale.
“Elise.”
I stopped.
He swallowed.
“We need to talk.”
I looked at him.
“Yes.”
He stepped closer.
“I can explain everything.”
I stared.
“The affair?”
He flinched.
“The forged documents?”
His mouth tightened.
“The forty-eight-million-dollar loan?”
Silence.
I took off my wedding ring.
Placed it on the table.
May you like
Then said:
“Start wherever you think the truth begins.”
