Chapter 14 - THE CHOICE THAT MADE ME STRONGER

A year after the night I saw Adrian enter the hotel with Celeste, I received a letter.
From Adrian.
It was handwritten.
Short.
And unexpectedly honest.
Elise,
I spent a long time blaming everyone else.
You.
Celeste.
Thomas.
The economy.
But the truth is that I made choices because I wanted success without accepting the possibility of failure.
I betrayed your trust.
I used your grief.
And I treated your father's legacy as something I could exploit.
I'm sorry.
I don't expect you to answer.
I just wanted to say it without asking you for anything.
Adrian.
I read it twice.
Then placed it in a drawer.
I didn't cry.
Didn't feel triumphant.
Didn't feel angry.
I simply felt finished.
That evening, Gabriel came over.
We cooked dinner together.
He burned the garlic.
I laughed.
He accused the stove of sabotage.
Afterward, we sat on my balcony overlooking the city.
Gabriel looked at me.
“You seem happy.”
I smiled.
“I am.”
He nodded.
“Good.”
I looked toward the skyline.
For years, I'd measured happiness by whether my marriage was working.
Whether Adrian was pleased.
Whether I was supportive enough.
Patient enough.
Understanding enough.
Now my life was larger.
My work.
My friends.
My family.
My choices.
Gabriel reached for my hand.
I took it.
He smiled.
“What are you thinking?”
I looked at him.
“That I don't want to rush anything.”
He nodded.
“Then we won't.”
I smiled.
And in that moment, I knew something.

A healthy relationship didn't require me to surrender my independence.
It made room for it.
