Chapter 11 - THE DAY ADRIAN LOST EVERYTHING HE THOUGHT HE OWNED

The investigations became public.
MorganWell's investors demanded answers.
Its proposed partnership with Vale Harbor was terminated.
Financial institutions reviewed the disputed documents.
And Adrian stepped down from his leadership role while the company examined his conduct.
I watched the news from my office.
For a moment, I felt nothing.
Then sadness.
Not for the company.
Not for the headlines.
For the man I'd once loved.
Adrian called that evening.
I let it go to voicemail.
He left a message.
“Elise, please. I know I've made mistakes. But I never meant for any of this to happen.”
I listened once.
Then forwarded it to Margaret.
Our divorce proceedings continued.
We worked through property disclosures.
Financial records.
And the separation of assets.
The family trust remained subject to its own legal terms, and the disputed guarantees were challenged.
Adrian requested one final conversation.
This time, I agreed.
With our attorneys aware of the meeting.
We met in a quiet conference room.
He looked older.
Tired.
Defeated.
“Elise,” he whispered.
I nodded.
“Adrian.”
He stared at me.
“I lost my company.”
I said nothing.
“My reputation.”
Silence.
“Celeste left.”
I looked at him.
He swallowed.
“And now I'm losing you.”
I took a slow breath.
“You lost me before any of those things happened.”
His eyes filled.
He looked down.
“I know.”
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then he whispered:
“Did you ever really love me?”
I felt tears rise.
“Yes.”
He looked up.
“Then why can't you forgive me?”
I swallowed.
“I can work toward forgiveness.”
His face softened.
I continued.
“But forgiveness doesn't mean staying married.”
He closed his eyes.
I stood.
May you like
“Goodbye, Adrian.”
This time, he didn't try to stop me.
