Chapter 12 - THE HOTEL THAT BECAME MINE AGAIN

Six months later, I stood in the lobby of the Vale Harbor Hotel.

The chandeliers glowed.

Guests crossed the marble floors.

The bronze elevators opened and closed.

Julian approached.

“Good morning, Elise.”

I smiled.

“Morning.”

We had spent months reviewing the company's operations.

Strengthening internal controls.

Updating authorization procedures.

And making sure no single executive could quietly grant access to owner-level privileges without proper verification.

The presidential residence had been returned to its intended status.

The disputed reservation was canceled.

The internal records corrected.

And the employees involved in the investigation were protected from retaliation.

I walked through the lobby.

For years, I'd thought of Vale Harbor as my father's company.

His achievement.

His legacy.

Now I understood that inheriting something didn't mean merely preserving it.

It meant deciding what it should become.

I introduced a new employee development program.

Expanded hospitality training.

And created a scholarship in my father's name.

Julian watched me review the plans.

“You're changing things.”

I smiled.

“Some things.”

He nodded.

“Your father would approve.”

I looked toward his photograph.

“Maybe.”

Julian laughed softly.

“He'd probably argue with you about the budget.”

I laughed.

“That sounds like Dad.”

Later that afternoon, I walked past the pastry shop across the street.

The same shop where I'd bought Adrian's favorite lemon pastries.

I stopped.

Looked through the window.

Then went inside.

The woman behind the counter smiled.

“The usual?”

I shook my head.

“Not today.”

I studied the display.

Then pointed.

“I'll have the chocolate croissant.”

She smiled.

“Excellent choice.”

I carried it back to the hotel.

Sat beside the window.

May you like

And ate it slowly.

It tasted like freedom.
