Chapter 13 - THE MAN WHO SAW ME WITHOUT MY LAST NAME

I met Gabriel Foster at a community development meeting.
He was an urban architect working on a neighborhood restoration project.
He wore a navy sweater.
Carried a battered notebook.
And had no idea who I was.
We were discussing the renovation of an old public library.
Gabriel was presenting accessibility improvements.
I asked a question about the proposed budget.
He looked at me.
Then smiled.
“That's a good question.”
We spent twenty minutes discussing funding.
Design.
Community needs.
And the challenge of preserving historic buildings while making them useful.
Afterward, he approached.
“I'm Gabriel.”
I smiled.
“Elise.”
He glanced at my notes.
“You work in development?”
“Hospitality.”
He nodded.
“Interesting.”
He didn't ask which company.
Didn't ask about my family.
Didn't recognize my last name.
For the first time in months, I felt strangely relieved.
We met again at another planning session.
Then for coffee.
Then dinner.
Gabriel was kind.
Funny.
Patient.
He listened.
One evening, I told him about my divorce.
Not every detail.
Just enough.
He nodded.
“That sounds painful.”
I swallowed.
“It was.”
He looked at me.
“Are you okay now?”
I thought about it.
“Getting there.”
He smiled.
“That's a good place to be.”
I looked at him.
Then laughed softly.
“What?”
I shook my head.
“Nothing.”

For the first time in a long time, I wasn't wondering what someone wanted from me.
I was simply enjoying being known.
