Chapter 9 - THE LITTLE GIRL BEHIND THE GLASS

Sophie weighed just over three pounds.
She was tiny.
Fragile.
Surrounded by equipment in the neonatal intensive care unit.
The first time I saw her, I stood beside the incubator and cried.
Her fingers were smaller than anything I'd ever held.
Her eyes were closed.
A nurse explained the monitors and the support Sophie needed.
I listened carefully.
Then asked:
"Can I touch her?"
The nurse smiled.
"Of course. Let me show you how."
I placed my hand gently against Sophie's back.
Her breathing remained steady.
I whispered:
"Hi, sweetheart."
My voice broke.
"It's Mommy."
She moved one tiny hand.
I smiled through tears.
"I'm here."
Maya stood beside me.
She was crying too.
For weeks, my world became the NICU.
Feeding schedules.
Medical updates.
Tiny improvements.
Occasional setbacks.
Every gram of weight gained felt like a victory.
Every stable night felt like a miracle.
Ryan learned about the birth through his attorney.
He requested to visit.
I didn't respond directly.
Natalie helped me address the request through appropriate legal and hospital procedures.
I wasn't trying to erase Ryan as Sophie's father.
But I would not pretend the circumstances of her birth were ordinary.
One afternoon, while Sophie slept, Maya handed me a letter.
"Ryan sent this."
I stared at the envelope.
I almost threw it away.
Then I opened it.
Emily,
I don't know how to apologize for what happened.
I was a coward.
I saw you lying there, and I chose to protect Vanessa because I was afraid of losing everything.
I lost everything anyway.
I stopped reading.
Tears blurred the page.
For years, I'd waited for Ryan to admit the truth.
Now that he had, I discovered something unexpected.
His confession didn't heal me.
It simply confirmed what I'd already survived.
I folded the letter.
May you like
Then placed it in the drawer.
And returned my attention to Sophie.
