Chapter 12 - THE VERDICT AND THE GOODBYE

The criminal proceedings ended months later.
Vanessa was convicted of assault-related charges arising from the incident.
The court considered the video, witness testimony, and medical evidence.
The sentence included a period of incarceration and additional court-imposed conditions.
I listened quietly.
I didn't smile.
I didn't feel triumphant.
I felt tired.
But I also felt free.
Outside the courthouse, reporters gathered.
I declined interviews.
Natalie made a brief statement on my behalf.
Then Maya drove me home.
Home was no longer the large house with the stone steps.
I had moved into a smaller townhouse near the hospital.
There was a garden.
A bright kitchen.
And a nursery painted pale yellow.
Sophie had finally been discharged from the NICU.
She was gaining weight.
Her doctors remained involved in her follow-up care.
But she was home.
That evening, I held her against my chest.
She smelled like baby shampoo.
Her tiny hand rested against my collarbone.
I kissed her forehead.
"We made it, sweetheart."
She yawned.
I laughed softly.
Then my phone rang.
Ryan.
I stared at the screen.
For the first time in months, I answered.
"Emily."
His voice sounded unfamiliar.
"How is she?"
I looked down at Sophie.
"She's doing well."
A pause.
"I'm glad."
Silence.
Then he whispered:
"I'm sorry."
I closed my eyes.
"I know."
"Can you ever forgive me?"
I looked at my daughter.
Then answered honestly.
"Maybe someday."
His breath caught.
"But forgiveness doesn't mean we go back."
He said nothing.
I continued.
"You made your choices, Ryan."
My voice remained steady.
"And now I'm making mine."
May you like
I ended the call.
Then held Sophie a little closer.
