Chapter 1 - THE FALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

My husband's mistress pushed me down the stone steps while I was pregnant, and when Ryan came outside, he went to her instead of me. He thought he could call it an accident and make me accept his version, but that lie would not survive forever. And neither of them had noticed the one thing that could change everything.

My name is Emily, and the day Ryan underestimated me was the day he destroyed himself.

My shoulder hit the stone first.

Then my hip.

Then the back of my head.

Pain tore through my abdomen, and I wrapped both arms around my pregnant stomach.

"No."

I could barely breathe.

"Please."

My overnight bag had burst open. My phone had slid across the walkway, just beyond my reach.

Above me stood Vanessa Cole.

My husband's mistress.

The woman he had spent more than a year calling his "consultant."

Three hours earlier, I had seen the messages on Ryan's tablet. Hotel confirmations. Photographs. Promises about a future with Vanessa.

And one sentence I couldn't erase from my mind.

"Once the baby situation settles, everything changes."

The baby situation.

That was what my husband called our daughter.

I had packed a bag and tried to leave. Vanessa blocked my way, then followed me outside.

She told me Ryan felt trapped.

That my pregnancy complicated everything.

I told her she could have the man who said those things.

Then she shoved me.

Not a stumble.

Not a misunderstanding.

Her hand hit my shoulder, and the steps disappeared beneath my feet.

Now she walked down toward me.

Her face was pale, but she wasn't reaching for help.

She crouched close.

"Then you should have been more careful," she whispered.

"A fall like that can end very badly."

I tried to reach my phone.

Vanessa stood, placing her shoe beside it.

Then the front door opened.

Ryan.

For one desperate second, I believed he would see his pregnant wife on the ground and help me.

He looked at me.

He looked at Vanessa.

And he went to her first.

"Vanessa. Are you okay?"

She immediately began trembling.

"I tried to stop her."

I stared at him, waiting for him to ask about our baby.

Instead, he turned to me.

"Emily, what happened?"

Before I could answer, Vanessa said I had been furious. That I had shoved her. That I had found out about their affair and started screaming.

I forced the words out.

"You pushed me."

Vanessa recoiled.

Ryan glanced toward the open door, then toward the driveway.

He was looking to see who had witnessed this.

Then he spoke three words I would never forget.

"Emily, you fell."

I stared at him.

"I didn't."

"You were upset."

"She pushed me."

"Stop."

There was pain in my stomach. I told him so.

For one moment, his face changed.

Then headlights swept across the stone wall.

My sister Maya's car pulled into the driveway.

She ran straight to me, past Ryan.

"What happened?"

"She fell," Ryan said.

I grabbed Maya's wrist.

"No."

My voice was shaking, but I made myself say it.

"Vanessa pushed me."

Maya called 911.

When the ambulance arrived, Ryan told the paramedic the same lie.

"My wife fell down the stairs."

The paramedic looked at me.

"Ma'am, is that what happened?"

"No," I said. "I was pushed."

"By whom?"

I looked directly at Vanessa.

"Her."

As they carried me toward the ambulance, I looked back at the house.

Beneath the porch roof was a small black camera.

Its lens pointed toward the front steps.

May you like

I had forgotten it was there.

And from the look of what had just happened, Ryan had too.
