Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO WALKED INTO COURT

Vanessa's criminal case proceeded separately from my divorce.
I was asked to testify.
The thought terrified me.
I had spent months trying to rebuild my life.
Now I would have to describe the worst day of it in front of strangers.
Natalie helped me prepare.
Not by telling me what to say.
By reminding me that the truth was enough.
On the morning of my testimony, Maya drove me to the courthouse.
I wore a navy dress.
Flat shoes.
And the necklace my mother had given me before she died.
When I entered the courtroom, Vanessa was seated beside her attorney.
She looked smaller than I remembered.
For a moment, our eyes met.
I looked away.
When I took the stand, I described the argument.
The overnight bag.
The stone steps.
The shove.
The pain.
Ryan's lie.
I didn't exaggerate.
I didn't need to.
The prosecution introduced the security footage.
The courtroom watched.
I heard someone inhale sharply.
Then the recording ended.
Vanessa's attorney questioned my memory and suggested the contact had been accidental.
I answered calmly.
"I remember her hand hitting my shoulder."
The attorney asked whether I'd been upset.
"Yes."
"Angry?"
"Yes."
"Because you had discovered an affair?"
"Yes."
He leaned forward.
"So emotions were running high?"
I looked at him.
"Being angry doesn't mean I pushed myself down the stairs."
Silence.
I continued.
"I was trying to leave."
The attorney sat down.
When I stepped off the stand, Maya took my hand.
I was shaking.
May you like
But I was still standing.
And that mattered.
