Chapter 3 - THE VIDEO THEY FORGOT TO DELETE

Maya didn't return to the house.

Instead, she called my best friend, Natalie Brooks, a licensed attorney who had known me since college.

Natalie arrived at the hospital carrying a leather briefcase and an expression I'd never seen before.

"Tell me everything," she said.

I did.

The affair.

The messages.

The argument.

Vanessa's shove.

Ryan's refusal to help.

Natalie took careful notes.

When I finished, she asked about the camera.

I explained that the footage was stored in a cloud account connected to my email.

She looked at Maya.

"Do we have access?"

I nodded.

"Maybe."

I gave them the account information.

Maya opened the security application on her phone.

For several terrifying seconds, the screen loaded.

Then the camera feed appeared.

My front porch.

The stone steps.

The driveway.

Natalie leaned closer.

"Go back to the time of the incident."

Maya selected the recording.

We watched the front door open.

I appeared carrying my overnight bag.

Vanessa followed.

There was no audio at first.

The camera had been configured to record only when motion was detected.

Then Vanessa stepped into view.

I watched myself turn.

I watched her block my path.

And then I saw it.

Her arm extended.

Her hand struck my shoulder.

My body disappeared down the steps.

Maya gasped.

Natalie didn't speak.

The footage continued.

Vanessa walked down toward me.

She stood beside my phone.

Then Ryan appeared.

He went straight to her.

Even without sound, the truth was unmistakable.

Natalie paused the video.

"Emily."

I looked at her.

"That's evidence."

I began crying again.

Not because I was surprised.

Because for the first time since the fall, someone could see what had happened.

Someone could prove I wasn't lying.

Natalie downloaded the original recording and preserved the file information.

She advised Maya not to edit or circulate it.

Then she contacted the police officer assigned to my hospital report and arranged to provide the footage through the proper channels.

By evening, detectives had viewed the recording.

They interviewed me separately.

I repeated my account.

This time, I didn't hesitate.

When they asked whether I wanted to make a formal complaint, I said yes.

Later, Ryan appeared outside my hospital room.

He was carrying flowers.

White roses.

My favorite.

Maya stepped into the hallway before he could enter.

"You need to leave."

Ryan looked exhausted.

"Maya, she's my wife."

"She doesn't want to see you."

"I need to explain."

I heard his voice through the partially open door.

And something inside me finally hardened.

I called out.

"Ryan."

He appeared in the doorway.

His expression filled with relief.

"Emily."

I looked at the flowers.

Then at him.

"Did Vanessa tell you the camera was broken?"

His face changed.

The roses slipped slightly in his hand.

And I knew.

May you like

He had remembered.

Too late.
