Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT I HEARD MY OWN DEATH DISCUSSED

Grace called me at 9:18 p.m.
Her voice trembled.
“Mrs. Caldwell?”
I sat upright.
“Grace?”
“Mr. Caldwell is home.”
My stomach tightened.
“Okay.”
“He's arguing with someone.”
I closed my eyes.
“Who?”
“I think it's the woman.”
Vanessa.
Grace continued.
“They're talking about your trip.”
I froze.
“What trip?”
“The one to Switzerland.”
My heart began pounding.
Ethan had suggested we spend our anniversary in Switzerland.
A luxury mountain resort.
A private chalet.
A romantic getaway.
I'd been excited.
Now I felt sick.
Grace whispered:
“He said the paperwork had to be finished before you left.”
I gripped the phone.
“Grace, leave the house.”
“But—”
“Please.”
She hesitated.
Then nodded.
“Okay.”
I ended the call.
And immediately contacted Margaret.
We documented the information and sought legal advice about protective measures.
I didn't know what Ethan intended.
May you like
But I wasn't going to Switzerland.
And I wasn't going home.
