Chapter 4 - THE SECRET BEHIND OUR MARRIAGE

I'd met Ethan Caldwell when I was twenty-four.

He was charming.

Ambitious.

Funny.

He remembered my coffee order.

Sent flowers when I was sick.

Called my grandmother every Sunday.

When we married two years later, everyone said I was lucky.

I believed them.

My family owned a successful manufacturing business.

My grandfather had founded it.

My father expanded it.

And when both died, my mother inherited the controlling interest.

After her death, much of that interest passed into a trust benefiting me.

Ethan had always told me he didn't care about the money.

He wanted me.

Not the inheritance.

Not the house.

Not the company.

Just me.

Now I wondered whether that had ever been true.

Margaret studied my face.

“Laura.”

I looked up.

“Did Ethan ever pressure you to change your estate documents?”

I thought.

Then nodded.

“Three years ago.”

“What happened?”

“He said married couples shouldn't keep separate financial arrangements.”

Margaret's expression tightened.

“And?”

“I refused.”

She nodded slowly.

“That may have been the first time he tried.”

My stomach dropped.

“The first time?”

May you like

She leaned forward.

“Laura, I think we need to examine everything he's asked you to sign since your wedding.”
