Chapter 5 - THE ATTORNEY WHO TOLD ME NOT TO GO HOME

The investigation began quietly.

Margaret brought in a forensic accountant.

We reviewed bank statements.

Trust records.

Company filings.

Insurance documents.

And every agreement Ethan had asked me to sign over the previous five years.

Some were legitimate.

Others raised questions.

One document appeared to authorize Ethan to act on my behalf in certain financial matters.

I didn't remember signing it.

Margaret sent it for examination.

The preliminary findings suggested my signature might not be authentic.

I stared at the report.

“He forged it?”

Margaret shook her head.

“We need more evidence before concluding that.”

I looked down.

“But someone used my name.”

“Yes.”

My hands began shaking.

I thought of Ethan standing beside Vanessa.

Promising her my house.

My money.

My future.

Then I remembered Grace's warning.

The insurance policy.

I looked at Margaret.

“There's something else.”

She waited.

I told her.

Her expression changed.

“Laura, I want you to document exactly what Grace heard.”

I swallowed.

“And then?”

“Then we discuss the appropriate protective steps with law enforcement.”

For the first time, I understood that this wasn't simply a divorce.

It was a fight to protect my life.
