Chapter 12 - THE DINNER WHERE EVERYTHING CHANGED

Ethan requested a meeting.
Margaret advised that it take place with attorneys present.
I agreed.
We met in a private conference room.
Ethan arrived wearing the same navy suit he'd worn to our tenth anniversary dinner.
For a moment, the sight hurt.
Then I remembered Vanessa wearing my robe.
He sat across from me.
“Laura.”
I nodded.
“Ethan.”
He looked exhausted.
“I want to fix this.”
I studied him.
“Which part?”
He frowned.
“Our marriage.”
I smiled sadly.
“You mean the marriage you were planning to replace?”
His face tightened.
“Vanessa meant nothing.”
I laughed softly.
“She was wearing my clothes.”
Silence.
“You told her the house was hers.”
He looked away.
“And you expected me to sign documents I hadn't read.”
Ethan leaned forward.
“Laura, you're misunderstanding everything.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
I placed the disputed documents on the table.
“For eleven years, I misunderstood you.”
He stared.

Then I continued:
“I'm not doing it anymore.”
