Chapter 6 - Vanessa’s Other Family

Vanessa Cárdenas was not her legal name.

She had been born Veronica Reyes.

Malcolm’s daughter.

Marisol’s cousin.

The mistress who slapped me knew exactly whose embryo Maya carried.

She had grown up with Marisol.

Attended her wedding to Gabriel.

Visited the fertility clinic after the couple created embryos.

When Malcolm entered a business dispute with Gabriel, he decided the remaining embryo gave him leverage over future family inheritance.

Gabriel’s technology company held patents worth hundreds of millions.

If he and Marisol had a child, that child would inherit control.

Malcolm could not legally seize the embryo.

So Dr. Voss moved it.

Justin became involved because Suncrest wanted access to his employer’s real-estate network and political relationships.

He agreed to participate in exchange for equity.

Vanessa was assigned to manage the story.

The affair may have begun as part of the scheme.

Then it became real enough to produce jealousy.

When she saw me at the clinic, carrying Maya, Vanessa did not only see Justin’s wife.

She saw the child who could expose her family’s crime.

Rosa had arranged the appointment deliberately because she suspected Vanessa would appear for a meeting with Dr. Voss.

Vanessa understood the trap too late.

Her slap was not random.

It was panic.

Federal agents arrested her on charges related to assault, conspiracy, medical fraud, identity fraud, and obstruction.

During questioning, she asked for protection from Malcolm.

“He will kill me,” she said.

“Did he kill Gabriel?” the agent asked.

Vanessa began crying.

She had been present when Malcolm ordered Gabriel’s boat sabotaged.

The accident had not been an accident.

Gabriel died because he threatened to expose the embryo theft and financial laundering.

Vanessa accepted a cooperation agreement.

She provided account codes, messages, and the location of Dr. Voss.

He was arrested at a private residence near Puerto Vallarta.

Malcolm Reyes fled.

His assets were frozen.

Suncrest Development’s board suspended him.

The case expanded into a federal conspiracy involving medical executives, private clinics, insurance fraud, and corporate money laundering.

Justin’s affair had connected him to people far more dangerous than he understood.

But he was not an innocent man trapped by them.

He had read the documents.

Accepted the money.

Threatened me.

And prepared to use Maya as leverage.

May you like

He chose every step.
