Chapter 9 - The Judge He Told Me to Fear

The criminal trial lasted eleven weeks.

Vanessa testified about the false pregnancy, public-relations plan, and Malcolm’s role.

Dr. Voss admitted transferring embryos without consent and creating false medical records.

Dr. Price described the incapacity reports, though he minimized his responsibility.

Rosa explained her attempts to contact me.

Marisol testified about the stolen embryo, Gabriel’s death, and forced confinement.

I testified last.

Justin watched me from the defense table.

His attorney approached.

“You acknowledge Justin raised Maya from birth?”

“He lived in the same home.”

“That was not my question.”

“He sometimes cared for her.”

“Did she recognize him as her father?”

“Yes.”

“Then his desire for custody was natural.”

“Natural desire does not require forged toxicology reports.”

The attorney changed direction.

“You formed an alliance with Marisol after learning she was Maya’s genetic mother.”

“We formed a parenting plan.”

“Were you afraid she would take Maya?”

“Yes.”

“Then you had motive to exaggerate Justin’s actions.”

“My fear does not create wire transfers, forged tests, or passports.”

He asked about the clinic.

“Did Vanessa provoke you?”

“She insulted Maya.”

“Did you raise your voice?”

“Yes.”

“Could Vanessa have felt threatened?”

“She struck me while I held a baby.”

“Justin attempted to calm the situation.”

“He protected Vanessa and threatened custody.”

The security video played.

No interpretation survived it.

Justin’s own recorded call was played next.

His words filled the courtroom:

I was protecting my parental rights.

Then:

Maya is safe because of what I did.

The prosecutor asked:

“What did he do?”

I answered:

“He participated in stealing an embryo, hiding the genetic mother, falsifying my medical records, and planning to remove my daughter.”

The jury convicted Justin of conspiracy, attempted kidnapping, medical fraud, identity fraud, obstruction, coercive control, wire fraud, and falsification of evidence.

He received thirty-six years.

Vanessa received fifteen under her cooperation agreement.

Dr. Voss received forty years.

Dr. Price received a shorter sentence and lost his license.

Malcolm was arrested six months later in Panama and extradited.

He was convicted of Gabriel’s murder, conspiracy, medical trafficking, fraud, kidnapping, and money laundering.

He received life imprisonment.

At the final family-court hearing, the judge addressed Maya’s parentage.

Justin’s legal paternity was terminated due to fraud and criminal conduct.

Marisol was recognized as Maya’s genetic mother.

I remained her legal and custodial mother because I had carried, delivered, and raised her.

Neither mother was erased.

We received joint legal recognition under a specialized order.

Maya would live primarily with me while Marisol continued recovery and gradually increased contact.

The judge looked toward us.

“This child was treated as property by nearly every institution involved. This court will not repeat that error.”

Justin had told me to speak to the judge.

I did.

So did Marisol.

The judge listened to both of us.
