Chapter 6 - THE BOARDROOM AT NINE
The emergency board meeting began at nine the following morning.
Ronan arrived furious.
He wore a navy suit.
No tie.
His jaw was tight.
He looked at me.
“What is this?”
I gestured toward his chair.
“Sit down.”
He stared.
“Mara.”
I met his eyes.
“Please.”
The other directors watched silently.
Ronan sat.
Our corporate counsel began presenting the findings.
Unauthorized personal expenses.
Conflicts of interest.
Compensation irregularities.
And potential breaches of company policy.
Ronan interrupted.
“This is ridiculous.”
I looked at him.
“Let her finish.”
He turned toward me.
“You're doing this because of Kelsey.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
He laughed bitterly.
“Don't lie.”
I leaned forward.
“I'm doing this because you used company money to buy your girlfriend jewelry.”
Silence.
Ronan's face went pale.
“And because you approved compensation changes without the required review.”
He stared.
I continued.
“You didn't just betray your wife.”

“You betrayed the company we built.”
