Kelsey arrived at the office at 10:17 a.m.
Wearing cream trousers.
A camel coat.
And the diamond earrings Ronan had given her for Christmas.
I knew about the earrings.
I'd seen the receipt.
He'd charged them to a company card.
Kelsey walked into the executive suite carrying coffee.

My nameplate was on Ronan's desk.
MARA ELLISON — CHAIR & CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
She stared.
“Where's Ronan?”
I looked up.
“Good morning, Kelsey.”
Her smile faltered.
“I thought he was coming in.”
“He has been asked to work remotely while we review certain matters.”
She frowned.
“Review?”
I closed the file in front of me.
“Company expenses.”
Her face changed.
I noticed.
Then smiled politely.
“Is there something you'd like to tell me?”
Kelsey swallowed.
“No.”
I nodded.
“Then Human Resources will contact you.”
May you like
She stood still.
For the first time since I'd met her, she seemed unsure whether she was the most important woman in the room.
