Chapter 3 - THE MORNING RONAN LOST HIS KEYS

At 6:12 a.m., Ronan returned.
I was sitting at the kitchen table.
Dressed.
Calm.
A folder lay beside my coffee.
He looked exhausted.
“Kelsey finally fell asleep.”
I nodded.
“Good.”
He dropped his keys onto the counter.
“She was really sick.”
I looked at him.
“Did you take her to the hospital?”
He hesitated.
“No.”
“Urgent care?”
“No.”
“Call a doctor?”
He frowned.
“Mara.”
I nodded slowly.
“So you stayed at her apartment.”
“She needed someone.”
I looked toward the folder.
Then slid it across the table.
Ronan stared.
“What is this?”
“Notice of separation.”
His face changed.
“Mara.”
I continued.
“And a notice that your executive access is being reviewed under the company's governance procedures.”
He laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because he thought I was bluffing.
“You can't do that.”
I looked at him.
“Read the documents.”
He opened the folder.
His expression changed.
Then changed again.
“Mara, what the hell have you done?”
May you like
I took a sip of coffee.
“Something I should have done a year ago.”
