Chapter 5 - The Five-Million-Dollar Policy

At 1:30 AM, the private observation suite at St. Jude Memorial Hospital was bathed in the sterile white glare of fluorescent lamps.
Noah and I were both hooked to IV lines receiving high-potency fluid diuresis and activated charcoal binders.
Dr. Robert Bennett, Chief of Clinical Toxicology, walked into the room holding a laboratory report with red priority stamps across the margins.
"Mrs. Vance," Dr. Bennett said, his face grim. "The state forensic lab just completed the rapid mass spectrometry on the food sample you provided."
I sat up in bed, holding Noah’s sleeping hand. "What was in it, Doctor?"
"A lethal cocktail of concentrated Succinylcholine—a short-acting paralytic agent typically used in surgical intubations—combined with massive doses of liquid Zolpidem," Dr. Bennett explained. "The Zolpidem caused rapid central nervous system depression within ten minutes, while the paralytic compound was dosed to induce complete respiratory arrest within forty-five minutes."
My heart went cold as stone.
If Noah and I hadn't forced ourselves to gag and spit out the majority of the meal into our napkins while Daniel turned his back to fetch the water glasses, the paralytic would have stopped our lungs before the 911 dispatcher could even trace the landline.
Detective Stone walked into the room, tossing a thick manila folder onto the rolling tray table.
"It gets worse, Hannah," Detective Stone said quietly.
"The insurance?" I asked, my voice devoid of any surprise.
Detective Stone nodded grimly. "Two months ago, Daniel took out a supplemental term life insurance policy on both you and Noah through an offshore underwriter in Bermuda."
He opened the folder, pointing to the red-inked declarations:
Primary Insured: Hannah Vance ($3,000,000).
Secondary Insured: Noah Vance ($2,000,000).
Sole Beneficiary: Daniel Vance.

Double Indemnity Clause: In the event of accidental death by domestic fire or structural explosion, the total payout doubled to $10,000,000.
"Your signature on the policy document was forged," Detective Stone added. "And we found the notary stamp belonged to an administrative clerk at Daniel’s commercial logistics firm."
