Chapter 4 - The Sample in the Waistband

Detective Stone didn't hesitate. "Disarm him and cuff him!"
Two deputies shoved Daniel face-first against the kitchen doorframe, twisting his arms behind his back and clicking the steel handcuffs shut around his wrists with a sharp, resounding snap.
"Hannah! Tell them!" Daniel screamed, thrashing against the officers as his manufactured mask of a loving husband shattered into pure, rabid panic. "I made dinner for us! It was food poisoning! I didn't do anything!"
Paramedics swarmed through the back door with trauma bags, portable oxygen tanks, and stretchers.
"Check the boy first," I told the lead paramedic, holding Noah close against my chest.
Noah leaned into me, his small hands gripping my shirt. "Mom... I'm dizzy, but I can breathe."
"Administer high-flow oxygen and prep bilateral IV access," the paramedic instructed his partner.
I reached beneath the hem of my sweatpants, pulled the sealed freezer bag containing the scraped dinner portion from my waistband, and handed it directly to Detective Stone.
"This is the food from my plate, Detective," I said. "The blue plate on the table is untouched. Daniel served me and Noah from a separate pan while he ate a pre-packaged salad."
Detective Stone took the evidence bag, his eyes narrowing into cold slits of professional focus. "You preserved this before the 911 call?"
"Yes," I replied. "And I have the corded phone logs behind the pantry."
Daniel went dead silent.

He stared at the plastic bag in Detective Stone’s hands, then looked at me. For nine years, he had treated me like a quiet, submissive housewife who never questioned his late nights, his secret bank accounts, or his subtle cruelty.
In a single glance, he realized that the woman he thought he had buried had outmaneuvered him before the poison had even entered her bloodstream.
