Chapter 3 - The Medical Airlift to Whitmore Tower

================================================================================

Before I could ask another question, the roar of twin turbine engines echoed from the sky.

A private medical helicopter bearing the medical insignia of the Cleveland Clinic descended onto the manicured back lawn of the estate. Two elite flight physicians and a trauma nurse stepped out with specialized diagnostic equipment.

“Mr. Whitmore,” Dr. Marcus Cole called out, jogging up to the terrace. “The mobile team has reached the Elmwood Avenue apartment. Patient Grace Vance has been stabilized and is en route via critical care transport to the private medical pavilion at Whitmore Memorial Hospital.”

Arthur stood up, his cane tapping the flagstones with authority. “What is her condition, Marcus?”

“Severe acute bacterial pneumonia complicated by systemic exhaustion and dehydration,” Dr. Cole reported grimly. “Her pulmonary function was down to sixty percent. Had she remained in that unheated apartment for another twelve hours, her lungs would have completely collapsed.”

Annie buried her face into my coat, letting out a frightened sob.

Arthur gently placed his broad hand on top of Annie’s head, stroking her curls with fierce, protective warmth.

“She is in the finest medical care on the eastern seaboard now, little bird,” Arthur promised her softly. “Her battle is over. Grandpa is taking care of everything.”

He turned to his private driver, Jenkins, who stood by a pristine black armored Suburban. “Jenkins, take Caleb and Annie upstairs to the east guest suites. Have Mrs. Gable prepare hot baths, warm clothes, and a complete banquet lunch. Then bring my car around. I am going to the hospital.”

“Sir,” I spoke up, planting my feet firmly on the stone steps. “We aren't staying here while Grace is in a hospital bed. We’re going with you.”

Arthur looked down at me. For the first time all morning, a faint, proud smile touched the corners of his lips.

May you like

“You have your father’s stubborn spine, Caleb,” Arthur said, nodding respectfully. “Get in the car.”
