Chapter 2 - The Shadows in the AlleyThe warmth of the ballroom vanished as Evelyn Whitmore surged to her feet with the lethal grace of a monarch whose kingdom had just been threatened.

“Captain Vance!” Evelyn’s voice rang across the hall like a rifle shot.
A tall, broad-shouldered man in a dark tactical suit stepped forward from the perimeter of the room. It was Thomas Vance, head of the private Whitmore Executive Security Division.
“Ma'am?”
“Lock down the ballroom exits,” Evelyn commanded, her voice dropping into a tone of chilling, absolute authority. “Deploy the alpha tactical team to the south delivery alley on 49th Street right now. My daughter is out there, and she is being hunted.”
Before the guests could fully process what was happening, Evelyn kicked off her designer heels, grabbed a heavy wool overcoat from the cloakroom, wrapped it around my shivering shoulders, and scooped me into her arms.
“Show me where she is, sweetheart,” Evelyn whispered against my hair.
We burst through the service doors into the biting Manhattan night. Freezing rain mixed with sleet lashed against the brick walls. Red emergency lights from two armored Whitmore SUVs bathed the narrow asphalt alley in an eerie, blood-colored glow.
At the far end of the alley, near a row of industrial dumpsters, three men in dark tactical jackets were cornering a figure slumped behind a stack of wooden shipping pallets.
One of the men held a silenced automatic pistol, raising it toward the shadows.
“You’ve run out of pavement, Sarah,” a gravelly voice sneered above the howling wind. “Julian wants this settled tonight.”
“Drop your weapons!” Captain Vance roared as six private security operators emerged from the shadows, laser sights painting the three attackers with vivid red dots.
The lead gunman spun around, but before he could raise his weapon, Vance fired two non-lethal kinetic rounds into his chest, dropping him instantly onto the slush-covered asphalt. The other two men scrambled toward a waiting black sedan, tires screeching as they fled into the 49th Street traffic.
“Clear the perimeter!” Vance yelled into his radio.
Evelyn ran forward through the freezing rain, falling to her knees in the dirty snow beside the wooden pallets.
“Sarah!” Evelyn cried out, her hands reaching into the shadows.
Huddled against the brick wall, wearing a torn winter jacket stained with blood across her left ribs, was my mother. Her face was pale as marble, her breathing shallow and ragged, but when her eyes fluttered open and saw Evelyn, a faint, fragile smile touched her cracked lips.
“Mother...” Sarah whispered, her voice barely carrying over the wind. “You found Lily.”
“I have her, my darling. I have both of you,” Evelyn sobbed, pulling Sarah’s head onto her lap and pressing a silk scarf against the bleeding wound. “Dr. Harrison! Bring the trauma kit over here now!”
Sarah looked up, her trembling fingers reaching out to touch my wet cheek. “Lily... my brave little girl... you made it inside.”

“I found Grandma, Mommy,” I cried, gripping her cold fingers. “We’re safe now.”
“You’re coming home, Sarah,” Evelyn vowed, her eyes burning with an unyielding, dangerous fire as paramedics lifted my mother onto a heavy titanium stretcher. “And whoever did this will answer to every drop of blood they took from you.”
