Chapter 7 - THE SECRET IN THE FAMILY TRUST

Three days later, Margaret Ellis discovered something unexpected.
The Whitmore family trust contained a sealed amendment.
Grace's grandfather had signed it shortly before his death.
The amendment concerned a separate portfolio of shipping patents, port access agreements, and waterfront property.
Assets Ethan had never known existed.
Margaret called Grace immediately.
“There's something you need to see.”
Grace arrived at the resort's private office with Declan.
Margaret placed the documents on the table.
“Your grandfather established a second trust.”
Grace frowned.
“Why?”
“To protect certain assets from future spouses and outside creditors.”
Grace stared.
“How much?”
Margaret hesitated.
“Based on preliminary valuations, approximately six hundred and eighty million dollars.”
Grace went completely still.
“What?”
Declan looked at Margaret.
“Are the assets liquid?”
“Some are. Most are long-term holdings.”
Grace sat down slowly.
For years, Ethan had told her she was lucky to be married to a successful businessman.
He had laughed when she suggested returning to corporate finance.
He had told friends she was terrible with money.
And now she was discovering that her grandfather had left her an independent fortune large enough to change the future of the company.
Grace looked at Margaret.
“Why didn't I know?”
“The trust was structured to become fully accessible under certain conditions.”
“What conditions?”
Margaret looked at her.
“One was the birth of your first child.”
Grace placed a hand over her stomach.
“And the other?”
Margaret hesitated.
“Evidence that a spouse had attempted to misuse your inherited assets.”
The room went silent.
Grace looked toward the ocean.
Her grandfather had died before she married Ethan.
Yet somehow, he had anticipated that someone might try to exploit her.
Declan spoke quietly.
“Grace.”
She looked at him.
“You don't need anyone to rescue you.”
Her eyes filled.
May you like
He smiled.
“You already have everything you need to rebuild.”
