Chapter 4 - THE BILLIONAIRE WHO REMEMBERED HER

Declan Pierce had known Grace Whitmore long before she became Grace Calloway.

Fourteen years earlier, she had been a scholarship student at Columbia University.

He had been twenty-five.

A young entrepreneur sleeping in his office while trying to keep his first company alive.

They met at a university fundraising event.

Grace was volunteering.

Declan had arrived because someone promised him introductions to investors.

He had spilled coffee on his only good jacket.

Grace had laughed.

Then handed him a napkin.

“That's a terrible first impression.”

He had smiled.

“I'm hoping my second will be better.”

She helped him find a dry jacket.

Then spent an hour listening to his business plan.

Unlike the investors, she asked questions.

Smart ones.

Difficult ones.

Questions that forced him to reconsider his strategy.

Three months later, his company received its first major contract.

Grace never knew that Declan considered their conversation one of the reasons he succeeded.

Years passed.

He built an empire.

She married Ethan Calloway.

They lost contact.

Until six months earlier.

Grace had called his office.

She asked for a meeting.

Not money.

Not favors.

Advice.

Declan remembered her immediately.

When she explained the financial irregularities inside Calloway Maritime, he offered to help investigate.

What he discovered shocked him.

Ethan had been using Grace's inherited assets to finance risky acquisitions.

Vanessa had been receiving unauthorized payments through consulting companies.

And several executives were preparing to sell valuable shipping contracts without Grace's approval.

Declan helped her assemble an independent legal team.

He did not ask for control.

He did not ask for a percentage of her inheritance.

He simply helped her understand what she already owned.

Now, standing beside the conference room windows, he looked at Grace.

“You should rest.”

She smiled.

“You sound like my doctor.”

“Your doctor is probably right.”

Grace laughed softly.

Then placed a hand over her stomach.

The baby kicked.

Declan noticed.

“Is he active?”

“Very.”

“May I?”

Grace looked surprised.

Then nodded.

Declan placed his hand gently against her belly.

A tiny movement pressed against his palm.

He smiled.

For a moment, the ruthless billionaire looked almost boyish.

“Hello there.”

Grace laughed.

“He seems to like you.”

Declan looked at her.

His expression softened.

“I hope so.”

Neither spoke for several seconds.

Then Grace withdrew slightly.

“Declan.”

“Yes?”

“I need you to understand something.”

He nodded.

“I'm not looking for another relationship.”

His expression remained calm.

“I know.”

“I'm barely surviving the one I'm leaving.”

“I understand.”

She looked at him.

“Then why are you helping me?”

Declan smiled sadly.

“Because you helped me once when you had nothing to gain.”

Grace stared.

May you like

He continued.

“And because I know what it's like to have someone underestimate you.”
