Chapter 10 - THE BILLIONAIRE WHO LOST HIS HEART

Declan Pierce had spent fifteen years building companies.

He understood acquisitions.

Debt structures.

International markets.

Hostile takeovers.

He could walk into a boardroom and identify weakness before anyone finished the first presentation.

But Grace Whitmore Calloway confused him.

Not because she was unpredictable.

Because she made him want things he'd stopped allowing himself to imagine.

A home.

Family dinners.

Ordinary mornings.

A child laughing in the hallway.

He had once been engaged.

At thirty-one, he'd planned to marry a woman named Caroline Mercer.

She left him three months before the wedding.

Not because he was poor.

Not because he was cruel.

Because he was never home.

He had spent years believing success could replace everything else.

By the time he realized it couldn't, he had forgotten how to build a life outside work.

Then Grace returned.

She was intelligent.

Kind.

Stubborn.

And determined to protect a child who hadn't even been born.

Declan admired her.

But he also understood that admiration could become selfish if he allowed himself to mistake her vulnerability for an invitation.

So he waited.

He helped when she asked.

Stepped back when she needed space.

And never made her feel that gratitude was a debt.

One evening, Grace invited him to dinner.

Not a business meeting.

Not a legal consultation.

Dinner.

They sat on a quiet terrace overlooking the water.

Grace wore a pale blue dress.

Her hair was loose.

She laughed when Declan admitted he couldn't cook anything more complicated than eggs.

“America's youngest billionaire CEO can't make pasta?”

“I can order pasta.”

“That doesn't count.”

“It counts if it's good pasta.”

She laughed again.

Declan watched her.

Then said quietly, “I missed that.”

Grace looked up.

“What?”

“Your laugh.”

Her expression softened.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Grace reached across the table.

Placed her hand over his.

Declan looked down.

Then back at her.

“Grace?”

She smiled.

“I think I'd like to get to know you again.”

His heart began pounding.

May you like

He nodded.

“I'd like that too.”
