Chapter 13 - THE FATHER WHO LEARNED TOO LATE

Oliver spent several days under observation because he had arrived early.
Grace remained at the hospital.
Declan visited during the hours she welcomed him.
Ethan also came.
But he no longer entered rooms without asking.
No longer demanded answers.
No longer assumed Grace would forgive him because they shared a child.
One afternoon, Ethan stood beside Oliver's bassinet.
Grace watched him.
He looked exhausted.
“Grace.”
“Yes?”
“I've signed the divorce agreement.”
She nodded.
“Thank you.”
“I also agreed to the financial settlement.”
“Good.”
He hesitated.
“I know I don't deserve another chance.”
Grace looked at him.
“No.”
He swallowed.
“I loved you.”
She smiled sadly.
“I believe you did.”
His eyes filled.
“But not enough?”
Grace considered the question.
Then answered quietly.
“You loved the parts of me that made your life easier.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
She continued.
“You loved having someone who believed in you. Someone who supported you. Someone who made excuses for you.”
A tear rolled down his cheek.
“But you didn't respect me enough to tell me the truth.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
Grace looked toward Oliver.
“I hope you become a good father.”
Ethan's voice broke.
“I'll try.”
“Don't try for me.”
She looked back at him.
“Do it for him.”
Ethan nodded.
Then kissed Oliver's forehead.
And left.
May you like
Grace watched the door close.
For the first time, she felt no desire to follow.
