Chapter 9 - The Night the Lights Went Out

Z
The storm arrived just after sunset.
Rain hammered the windows, and the lights flickered throughout the mansion. Dominic had returned from a meeting with Rachel when the security system sounded an alert.
One camera had gone dark.
Then another.
Leo hurried into the study.
“We've lost coverage on the west entrance.”
“Get the staff into the secure rooms,” Dominic ordered.
“Already moving.”
Chloe was in the conservatory with Mia when the power failed.
The room went black.
Mia grabbed Chloe's hand.
A loud crash echoed from somewhere downstairs.
Chloe knelt and signed:
Look at me. We are together.
Mia's breathing quickened.
Chloe took out her phone and switched on its flashlight, directing the beam toward the floor so it wouldn't overwhelm her.
Footsteps sounded in the hallway.
Then Dominic appeared at the doorway, accompanied by Leo.
“Are you both all right?”
Chloe nodded.
Mia rushed toward her father.
He caught her gently, then crouched so they were at eye level.
“I'm here,” he signed.
Mia pressed her face against his shoulder.
Dominic held her until her breathing steadied.
The security team restored power to part of the house. An intruder had entered through a service corridor, but the guards intercepted him before he reached the family quarters.
The man carried no weapon.
He had a small camera and a folded piece of paper.
On it was a message for Dominic.
Return the ledger, or the next accident will not be an accident.
Dominic's expression became dangerously calm.
Leo waited for orders.
For a moment, Chloe saw the man everyone feared—the man who could make an entire city hold its breath.
Then Mia touched his sleeve.
He looked down.
She signed:
No hurting.
Dominic stared at her.
He could have dismissed her concern as a child's misunderstanding. He could have promised that everything would be fine while preparing a violent response.
Instead, he lowered himself to her level.
“I will keep you safe,” he signed carefully. “I will not ask you to carry this.”
Mia studied him, then nodded.
Dominic turned to Leo.
“Call the police. Preserve the footage. Nobody touches the evidence.”
Leo blinked.
“Understood.”
Chloe watched Dominic give the same instructions to the security staff, making it clear that nobody was to retaliate or pursue the intruder privately.
It was a decision that might have seemed ordinary to another man.
For Dominic, it was a turning point.
He was choosing to protect his daughter without teaching her that violence was the only answer to fear.
Later, after Mia had fallen asleep, Chloe found him in the kitchen making tea.
“You didn't send anyone after him,” she observed.
“No.”
“Why?”
Dominic placed two cups on the counter.
“Because my daughter asked me not to hurt anyone.”
“And if she hadn't?”
He was silent for a moment.
“Then I would still have had a choice.”
Chloe accepted the cup he offered.
Outside, police vehicles moved through the gates. Investigators began documenting the break-in, while Rachel arranged emergency protection for the ledger and other evidence.
Dominic looked at Chloe.
“I don't know how to become the man she needs.”
“You don't have to become him overnight.”
“What if I fail?”
“Then you acknowledge it, repair what you can, and keep trying.”
He smiled faintly.
“You make it sound simple.”
“It isn't simple. It's just not impossible.”
For a moment, they stood close enough that Chloe could feel the warmth of his hand beside hers.
Neither moved.
Then Mia's bedroom door opened upstairs.
Both turned immediately.
Dominic went to his daughter.
Chloe watched him disappear into the hallway and realized that her feelings for him had begun changing in a way she could no longer ignore.
That frightened her more than the storm.

Because she knew what happened when people confused being needed with being loved.
And she was determined never to lose herself inside someone else's life again.
