Chapter 12 - Salvatore's Last Bargain

Z
Salvatore's world began collapsing when the financial investigation became public.
Companies he controlled faced audits. Former employees agreed to testify. Banks froze suspicious accounts, and prosecutors prepared charges related to fraud, intimidation, and evidence tampering.
Salvatore responded by requesting a private meeting with Dominic.
They met in a lawyer's conference room under the supervision of counsel.
No guards stood inside.
No weapons were permitted.
Salvatore looked older than he had a month earlier.
“You're destroying your father's legacy,” he said.
“I'm exposing what you did with it.”
“I protected this family.”
“You stole from it.”
“I made decisions you were too sentimental to make.”
Dominic's expression remained calm.
“Is that what you told Isabella?”
Salvatore's eyes narrowed.
“Your wife was a meddling woman who didn't understand the world she had entered.”
“She understood enough to recognize a fraud.”
Salvatore leaned forward.
“She would still be alive if she'd kept her nose out of my business.”
The room fell silent.
Dominic felt anger surge through him, but he did not move.
Rachel's hand rested on the file beside her.
“Mr. Russo,” she said evenly, “we are recording this meeting in accordance with the agreement.”
Salvatore looked at her.
Then at Dominic.
“You set me up.”
“No,” Dominic replied. “You chose your own words.”
Salvatore's lawyer immediately advised him to stop speaking.
But the damage was done.
The statement, together with the financial evidence and testimony already gathered, strengthened the prosecution's case. Investigators continued examining the circumstances of Isabella's death, careful not to claim more than the evidence supported.
When Dominic returned home, Mia was waiting in the conservatory.
She held up a sign.
Safe?
He knelt.
“The people investigating Uncle Salvatore are doing their jobs. We are safe here, and you don't have to worry about making anything happen.”
Mia studied him.
Then she signed:
You stay?
Dominic's throat tightened.
“Yes. I'm staying.”
She leaned against him.
Chloe watched from the doorway, her eyes shining.
That evening, Dominic made an announcement to his senior business associates. He would cooperate with the investigation, remove Salvatore's allies from positions where they could destroy evidence, and place legitimate operations under independent oversight.
Several men resigned.
Others protested.
Dominic did not threaten them into obedience.
He gave them a choice: cooperate with the transition or leave.
The old system would not disappear in a day, but it would no longer be protected by his silence.
Later, Chloe found him alone in the library.
“You know this will cost you,” she said.
“Yes.”
“Your influence. Some of your money. Maybe relationships you've had for years.”
“I know.”
“Are you frightened?”
He looked at her.
“Terrified.”
She took his hand.
“That doesn't mean you're making the wrong choice.”
He squeezed her fingers gently.
“Is that what you tell Mia?”
“Sometimes.”
“Does it help?”
“Not always.”
He smiled faintly.
“Honest answer.”
She leaned against his shoulder.
For a few minutes, they sat without speaking.
Then Dominic said, “I don't want Mia to grow up thinking that being feared is the same as being respected.”
Chloe looked at him.
“Then keep showing her the difference.”

He kissed her forehead.
And for the first time in his life, Dominic understood that building a future required more courage than defending a throne.
