Chapter 6 - The File Nobody Was Supposed to Find

Z
Chloe had never considered herself a detective.
She was a waitress who worked double shifts, paid rent, helped Toby with school, and tried to make sure there was enough money left at the end of the month to buy groceries.
But now she sat in Dominic's private study, looking through documents her mother had left behind.
Dominic had arranged for an independent attorney, Rachel Kim, to review the papers. Rachel made one thing clear before they began.
“No one touches an original document without recording it. No one destroys anything. And no one threatens anyone into providing information.”
Dominic nodded.
Chloe noticed that he listened carefully.
It was the first sign that he understood the investigation could not be handled like a dispute between rival crews.
The documents revealed that Elena Bennett had helped Isabella identify suspicious transfers from a company called Northstar Logistics.
Millions of dollars had moved through shell corporations. Some transactions were disguised as transportation expenses. Others were recorded as payments to suppliers that did not exist.
The company had been used to conceal money flowing into Salvatore Russo's private accounts.
But the most important document was missing.
A signed statement from Isabella.
Rachel explained that it could establish what Isabella knew and when she knew it. Without it, the financial evidence was significant but incomplete.
“Where would she have kept something like that?” Chloe asked.
“Somewhere she trusted,” Dominic replied.
Chloe remembered the shoebox.
They searched the conservatory, the library, and Isabella's old office. Behind a loose panel in a writing desk, Chloe found a small envelope bearing her mother's name.
Inside was a handwritten note.
If anything happens to me, do not trust the family account books. The truth is in the blue ledger. I have left a copy where the people who need it will understand what it means.
There was no location.
Only a date and a set of initials.
E.B.
Chloe recognized the date immediately.
It was the day her mother had taken her and Toby to visit their grandmother in Milwaukee.
Their grandmother had owned a small secondhand bookstore for decades. After she died, the shop had been sold, and the family had assumed everything inside had been donated.
“There's one place we haven't checked,” Chloe said.
Dominic looked at her.
“Where?”
“My grandmother's old bookstore.”
The next morning, they drove to Milwaukee with Rachel and two security professionals who were there for safety, not intimidation.
The bookstore had become a café. Its new owner remembered the former proprietor and allowed them to inspect a storage room containing old records and boxes of donated books.
In a battered blue dictionary, Chloe discovered a sealed envelope.
Inside was a tiny key.
The attached note contained only a sentence.
The ledger is not a weapon. It is proof. Use it to protect the innocent, not to punish the guilty.
Dominic read the words twice.
“Your mother knew what this could become,” he said.
“She knew what people do when they think money makes them untouchable.”
The key opened a small deposit box at a local bank. Rachel arranged the proper legal process, and the bank released the contents to the estate's authorized representative.
Inside lay a blue ledger and a flash drive.
The ledger documented years of financial fraud.
The flash drive contained scanned contracts, bank records, and recordings of conversations in which Salvatore discussed concealing payments.
There was also a short video.
Isabella appeared on the screen, sitting in the study Dominic had preserved after her death.
She looked tired, but determined.
“If you're watching this,” she said, “then I was unable to tell Dominic the truth myself.”
Dominic leaned forward.
His wife continued.
“Salvatore is not merely stealing money. He's preparing to take control of the family by creating a crisis and blaming Dominic for it. He believes fear will keep everyone silent.”
She looked directly into the camera.
“Dominic, if this reaches you, remember that your daughter is not a weakness. She is the reason you must become a better man.”
The video ended.
Dominic sat perfectly still.
Then Chloe noticed something in the final frame.
A reflection in the glass behind Isabella.
A man standing outside the study.
May you like
Salvatore.
And in his hand was a key to the room.
