Chapter 15 - A Ring Without a Price

Dominic did not propose in a restaurant.
He did not hire a string quartet, rent a ballroom, or arrange for a photographer to hide behind the flowers.
Instead, he asked Chloe to meet him in the conservatory on a quiet Sunday morning.
Mia was there, wearing a yellow dress and holding a small velvet box.
Chloe stopped in the doorway.
“What are you two planning?”
Mia grinned.
Dominic looked nervous.
That alone was enough to make Chloe suspicious.
He approached her slowly.
“I've spent most of my life believing that if I wanted something, I should find a way to obtain it.”
Chloe crossed her arms.
“That sounds ominous.”
He laughed nervously.
“I'm trying to be romantic.”
“Try harder.”
Mia giggled.
Dominic took a breath.
“You taught me that love isn't something a person can obtain. It's something two people choose, every day, without threats, bargains, or fear.”
He opened the velvet box.
Inside was a simple ring.
No enormous diamond. No family crest. No attempt to turn their relationship into a public display of wealth.
“Chloe Bennett, I love you. I love the way you listen to people when everyone else has stopped paying attention. I love your stubbornness, your courage, and the way you remind me that my daughter is not a problem to solve.”
His voice softened.
“I want to build a life with you. Not because you helped my family, and not because Mia needs you. I want to marry you because I love the woman you are when nobody is asking you to be anything else.”
He lowered himself onto one knee.
“Will you marry me?”
Chloe stared at him.
She had once believed that accepting a powerful man's love meant surrendering part of herself.
Dominic was offering something different.
A partnership.
A future she could enter freely.
“Yes,” she whispered.
Mia jumped up and down, waving her hands excitedly.
Then she signed:
Finally!
Chloe laughed through her tears.
Dominic slipped the ring onto her finger and stood.
He kissed her gently.
Mia immediately inserted herself between them and demanded a group hug.
They obeyed.
Later, Chloe asked Dominic whether he had worried she might say no.
“Of course.”
“What would you have done?”
“Accepted your answer.”
She studied him.
“Even if it broke your heart?”
He nodded.
“Especially then.”
Chloe kissed him again.
That afternoon, they sat together at the kitchen table and discussed practical matters: where they would live, how they would divide responsibilities, and what their marriage would look like.
Chloe insisted on keeping her own bank account and continuing her education.
Dominic supported both decisions.
They agreed that Mia would have a voice in family decisions without being made responsible for adult emotions.
They also agreed that the mansion would no longer be a place where everyone feared making mistakes.
The wedding would be small.
No political guests. No business associates invited out of obligation. No one who expected a seat at their table because of their power.
Just family, friends, and the people who had helped them rebuild their lives.
When Chloe called Toby to share the news, he cried.
Then he signed:
Does this mean I get to embarrass Dominic at the wedding?
Chloe smiled.
“Absolutely.”
Dominic, who had learned enough sign language to understand the sentence, groaned.
“I knew there was a catch.”
Mia laughed.

For once, nobody in the house was afraid of what would happen next.
They were simply looking forward to it.
