Chapter 14 - The Trial That Changed Everything

Z

The criminal proceedings lasted several months.

Salvatore's attorneys challenged the ledger, questioned the witnesses, and attempted to portray Isabella as an unreliable employee who had misunderstood legitimate transactions.

But the evidence had been independently verified.

Bank records matched the ledger. Emails confirmed the shell companies. Former employees described pressure to falsify invoices, and the recorded meeting captured Salvatore's own admission that Isabella had interfered with his plans.

The investigation into Isabella's death remained separate, with prosecutors presenting only evidence that met the required legal standards.

Chloe attended the hearings with Dominic and Rachel.

She was not there to deliver a dramatic speech.

She was there because her mother's documents had helped uncover the truth, and she wanted to see the process through.

When a defense attorney suggested that Elena Bennett had stolen confidential material for personal reasons, Chloe answered calmly.

“My mother kept the records because she believed the public deserved to know when money was being stolen and people were being threatened. She left them where investigators could find them. She didn't sell them, and she didn't ask for anything in return.”

The attorney tried to provoke her.

“Isn't it true that your family had financial difficulties?”

“Yes.”

“And you now have a close relationship with Mr. Russo?”

“Yes.”

“So you have something to gain from this case.”

Chloe looked directly at him.

“I have something to gain from the truth being established. That is why the records were examined by independent professionals instead of simply being accepted because I found them.”

The answer left the courtroom quiet.

Dominic watched her with unmistakable pride.

He had once believed that power meant controlling the room.

Chloe had shown him that sometimes power meant refusing to let the room control you.

The verdict came on a gray Thursday morning.

Salvatore was found guilty of multiple financial crimes and evidence tampering. The court ordered restitution where legally possible, and he faced a substantial prison sentence.

Other individuals involved in the scheme were also held accountable.

The proceedings did not answer every question about Isabella's death, but they established the financial conspiracy she had tried to expose.

After the verdict, Dominic stood outside the courthouse with Chloe.

“It's over,” he said.

“Part of it is.”

He nodded.

“The investigation into the crash will continue.”

“And whatever happens, Isabella's work mattered.”

Dominic looked toward the courthouse steps.

“She believed I could become someone better.”

“She believed you could choose.”

He turned toward Chloe.

“And you?”

“I believe people are responsible for the choices they make.”

He absorbed that.

Then he took her hand.

“I've made a lot of choices I'm not proud of.”

“I know.”

“I can't undo them.”

“No.”

“But I can choose what happens next.”

Chloe squeezed his hand.

“Yes. You can.”

That evening, Dominic sat with Mia and explained the verdict in language she could understand.

He told her that Uncle Salvatore had broken the law, that the court had made its decision, and that the adults responsible for the investigation would continue doing their work.

Mia listened.

Then she signed:

Mama would be proud?

Dominic's eyes filled.

“I think she would be proud that you were brave enough to tell us what you remembered. And she would be proud that we listened.”

Mia considered that.

Then she reached for her father's hand.

For years, Dominic had tried to protect his daughter by controlling every danger around her.

Now he understood that the most important thing he could give her was the confidence that her voice—spoken, signed, written, or drawn—would never be dismissed simply because someone powerful preferred not to hear it.
