Chapter 9 - THE SISTER BEHIND THE BLUE DOOR

Eleanor Hayes lived in a quiet neighborhood in Vermont.

She was sixty-seven.

A retired schoolteacher.

When Sophia arrived, Eleanor looked frightened.

“I knew someone might come eventually.”

Sophia stared.

“You knew?”

Eleanor nodded.

She explained that twenty-eight years earlier, she and her husband had adopted a baby through a private agency.

They were told the mother had voluntarily surrendered the child.

They named her Grace.

Grace grew up loved.

Happy.

Unaware of her biological family.

Sophia's heart pounded.

“Where is she now?”

Eleanor smiled sadly.

“She lives in Boston.”

Sophia swallowed.

“What does she do?”

Eleanor's eyes softened.

“She's a dancer.”

Sophia began crying.

Of course.

Of all the things her sister could have become.

She was a dancer.

Eleanor reached for her phone.

“I'll call her.”

Sophia shook her head.

“Please.”

She wiped her eyes.

“Let me tell her myself.”
