Chapter 10 - THE DANCE THAT BROUGHT THEM TOGETHER

Grace Hayes stood in a rehearsal studio in Boston.

She was twenty-eight.

Tall.

Graceful.

With dark curls and the same brown eyes Sophia saw in the mirror.

When Sophia entered, Grace stared.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Grace whispered:

“You look like me.”

Sophia laughed through tears.

“You look like my mother.”

Grace covered her mouth.

They stood facing each other.

Two women.

Two lives.

Separated by a decision neither had made.

Sophia held out a photograph.

“This is Lucia.”

Grace stared.

Her eyes filled.

“My mother?”

Sophia nodded.

“Our mother.”

Grace began crying.

They embraced.

For a long time, neither moved.

Then Grace pulled back.

“I don't know what to say.”

Sophia smiled.

“Neither do I.”

Grace laughed.

Then asked:

“Do you dance?”

Sophia smiled sadly.

“Only in my kitchen.”

Grace took her hand.

“Then let's start there.”

The music began.

Two sisters moved across the studio floor.

Not perfectly.

Not professionally.

May you like

But together.

And somewhere in that small room, the years they had lost began to feel less impossible to carry.
